Leaders in fire protection, DEM Fire’s 2022 year in review

As leaders in fire protection and essential services, we review DEM Fire’s 2022 year. It’s been a year that’s witnessed incredible growth, where the learnings have been abundant, the challenges exciting and the results exemplary.

How we have adapted to the digital world in designing our fire system solutions has also been a significant step forward in future-proof solutions.

Fire systems across multiple industries

We have had a bumper year as we expanded and grew our expertise across multiple industries. Each industry requires dedicated expertise to understand each sector’s risks and compliance requirements. We have designed bespoke fire systems in shopping centres, commercial kitchens and industrial environments that considered the unique risks of each one and were designed with a future-proof strategy in mind.

Our services also provide fire systems in new buildings. We have embarked on other projects this year where we have identified risks and worked with fire experts to mitigate these risks and provide invaluable expertise.

Hospital and school fire safety and fire protection are also two areas that require a specialised approach. When designing fire solutions in these environments, there are multiple factors to consider that can put occupants at a significantly higher risk. Working around the operational needs and planning evacuation processes can also prove challenging.

We learned some humble lessons this year with one of our long-standing clients, The Goodman Group.

Embracing technology in fire protection and essential services

We have pushed the envelope this year by integrating technology into our fire system design.

We highlighted the importance of using fire system baseline data to ensure asset management and fire compliance efficiency. We are also exploring nitrogen vortex firefighting systems for data centres that protect the assets within that environment.

Heritage buildings must comply with strict heritage protection compliance requirements, so we used WiFi technology to avoid altering the interior structure of a heritage building.

Our team also developed an innovative pre-action sprinkler system for a long-time client, Trend Pac, to protect their plastic injection moulding production. The system uses sophisticated technology that requires two elements to set it off.

Industry updates

This year was full of changes in the fire protection industry too.

We embraced the phasing out of FM200 HFC used in firefighting gas and have proactively begun to replace PFAS firefighting foam equipment across all our sites.

We consistently stay abreast of updates to the strata Annual Fire Safety Statements and ensure our team of in-house fire experts design fully accredited systems.

The BCA (Building Code Australia) is now known as the National Construction Code (NCC). Our Senior Fire System Designer, Kamal Adhikari, attended the detailed training workshop to unpack these structural changes and how DEM Fire will integrate the NCC compliance obligations across the business.

Our internal news

We acknowledged Mitchell Barter as DEM Fire’s inaugural winner of our Brian Macklin Award for exceptional apprentices committed to first-class fire safety.

We also welcomed Casey Sessions to the team as part of an apprenticeship program in DEM Fire’s efforts to positively affect change and encourage knowledge transfer across the fire services industry.

We sadly bid farewell to fire protection officer Stephen Thompson who has left the industry after over two decades to care for his ailing mum – a testament to the type of individual Stephen is and the asset he was to the team.

As a team, we also celebrated R U OK? Day and National Family Business Day in September.
