DEM Fire is very proud to announce the inaugural winner of our Brian Macklin Award. Brian Macklin (Macca) worked at DEM Fire from February 2011 up until his passing in October 2019. An outstanding fire safety professional, he left his mark on our company, our clients and everyone he met.
The Brian Macklin Award will recognise exceptional apprentices who, just like Macca, are committed to first-class fire safety.
“Macca represented the highest values in the profession,” says Gary Marshall, DEM Fire General Manager/Director. “It is a great honour to be able to present the inaugural Brian Macklin Award, and we are very pleased to announce that our first recipient is apprentice sprinkler fitter, Mitchell Barter.”
About the Brian Macklin Award
DEM Fire has established the Brian Macklin Award to recognise Brian’s skill, hard work and incredible commitment to fire prevention. He made his presence felt from the beginning.
“I remember the interview that Tom (Marshall) and I had with Macca, and after a considerably long meeting we felt like we had known each other for decades,” Gary says.
“Macca was the living history of the fire industry in Australia. He had incredible knowledge; he loved his fitters, and he was always providing advice, both work and non-work related. It was his commitment to people that typified the synergy between Macca and DEM Fire. He loved that we are a family business and people are at the centre of everything we do.”

“In establishing our Apprentice of the Year Award, it was clear that this was the perfect opportunity to both recognise the outstanding effort and achievement of a new member of the fire industry, whilst honouring a light that had shown the way for so many,” says Gary.
Introducing Mitchell Barter
DEM Fire is proud to announce Mitchell Barter as the 2022 Brian Macklin Award recipient. Also a runner up TAFE Apprentice of the Year, Mitchell helps install, test and repair fire suppression systems for customers including schools, stadiums, shopping centres and industrial sites.
“Mitchell has all the attributes that the award represents,” explains Gary. “He consistently delivers quality repairs, and he goes above and beyond in everything he does. He is always willing to help, and even as an apprentice, he will step up to lead his team. Mitchell is a great communicator, he builds good client rapport, he completes his work as requested and he is always respectful.”
We presented Mitchell with his award during our December Christmas party. To thank our team for their incredible hard work during another challenging year, we installed classic arcade games in our garage, and celebrated with wood-fired pizza from caterer, The Italian Job.
We look forward to following Mitchell’s progress as he continues to grow his career as a fire safety professional.
