Learn MoreDEM Fire recently celebrated 2021 Family Business Day, something that is particularly close to us given our origins as a small family business. We’re now a leader in fire and essential services, thanks to a dedicated and like-minded team that closely adheres to the values we began with – exceptional fire prevention services and outstanding customer solutions.
As an essential service provider, DEM Fire has maintained a skeleton staff in our head office during the Sydney lockdown, whilst our technicians have continued to provide our on-site system installation, asset management and fire compliance services for the duration of the pandemic.
We organised a joint in-office and virtual morning team to bring the whole team together on Family Business Day.
The staff working in our office had a special treat with coffee and cakes provided by Elevate Speciality Coffee. A fellow family business, it’s run by brothers David and Andrew, who between them have over 20 years’ experience in coffee and food businesses in Sydney and Brisbane.
“We’re brothers with the same dream. Our passion is people – and coffee and food just add to what we are trying to achieve. Over the years we have both worked at many different places all over Sydney and Brisbane, learning different skills and working with amazing coffees. We pray that Elevate is a place where everyone feels welcome and can become a part of our family.”
While it wasn’t quite the same, we did ensure our home team joining us via Teams would be well looked after for the meeting, by adding a morning tea allowance to their pay packets.
With some of our newest team members yet to meet the rest of the team in person, Janice Marshall, our Co-Founder and head of work health and safety, organised some informal interviews.
“Our employees are a big part of our family and therefore we wanted to get to know them better,” said Janice. “I interviewed some of our new family members with some fun questions so the rest of the team could learn a little bit about them. Many of our team had not seen the new members and certainly not seen them without masks on.”
The answers weren’t too surprising. In response to what the weirdest thing about the pandemic has been, typical responses were mask related. Some people were most looking forward to getting back to the gym after lockdown ends. And when asked how long they had been working from home, the answers ranged from “one week” to “I stopped counting after seven weeks!”
For many of our team members, one of the hardest things has been the constant juggle with work and parenting, and supervising schoolwork in particular.
Managing Director Tom Marshall believes there are some key differences between family business and the corporate world.
“I know that here at DEM Fire, we value every team member as part of the family, and it’s one reason we have a long-term plan to provide job security for our employees and to look after our next generation owners.”
DEM Fire founders, Janice, Tom and Gary Marshall have built a team of fire safety experts and support staff who have outstanding skills and industry knowledge – and a commitment to go above and beyond for every client.
Because we also believe that when we support our team, they look after our customers with exceptional solution design, system installation, asset management and fire compliance.
