How do we apply technology and innovation to fire protection measures?

The fire industry has come a long way over the past few decades. Advances in technology have revolutionised the way we approach fire and essential services, making it more efficient and effective.

At DEM Fire, we enjoy applying new and innovative technologies to our holistic strategies for fire protection and design.

Let’s explore some of the ways we’ve successfully utilised technology in the past.

Streamlining fire compliance using baseline data

Our team at DEM Fire sees fire system baseline data as integral to effective asset management, but often, this isn’t something each client fully understands the importance of.

The baseline data is a set of documentation and drawings that show us all the designs, commissions, reports, certificates and data sheets related to the fire protection design for that project.

Baseline data will vary from project to project, but it will typically include items such as:

  • installation and approved design documentation
  • alternative solutions
  • supply details
  • hazard classes
  • fire engineered reports
  • cause and effect charts
  • system specifications
  • data sheets on all installed equipment.

Your baseline data should also include essential drawings of items like block plans, building layouts, valve schedules, system interface diagrams and wet and dry systems.

Accessing your baseline data allows us to provide higher levels of certainty for the fire protection of your property. And if your baseline data is missing or incomplete, we can also help you re-establish it – which is a big project, but worth it in the long run.

Nitrogen vortex firefighting systems

One of the most crucial aspects of designing fire safety measures is ensuring that you make the right choice for that particular environment.

And in certain spaces, like data centres or server rooms that host large amounts of valuable electronics and technology, the use of traditional sprinkler systems or other water-based techniques can do more harm than good.

That’s where we can apply technology like nitrogen vortex firefighting systems.

A nitrogen vortex firefighting system is an advanced method of fire protection that combines nitrogen and water to extinguish flames. It works by directing a vortex of water and nitrogen at the source of the fire, cooling and reducing the oxygen supply and extinguishing the fire.

Applying this technology where appropriate has a number of great benefits. It only uses a small amount of water, leading to minimal water damage and it can manage fires extremely quickly as well, which minimises the risk of property damage or injury.

Designing bespoke fire systems with Wi-Fi

We love exploring alternative solutions to fire protection. It allows us to really think outside the box and get creative while providing the most suitable fire engineering to our clients.

One such alternative solution we’ve designed is the use of Wi-Fi technology to create a bespoke fire system in a heritage building.

DEM Fire created this solution when we received a commission to upgrade a late-19th century multi-residential heritage-listed building. Our objective was to fit the building with a new Fire Indication Panel (FIP) that suited modern standards but didn’t compromise the heritage aesthetics.

Our team was able to apply an alternative solution by creating a bespoke fire system that used Wi-Fi technology with Fusion smoke detectors.

This meant is wasn’t necessary to remove any of the decorative facades of the building to install wires for smoke detectors. Instead, we interconnected these smoke detectors through the Wi-Fi network.

Combining technology advancements with decades of experience

We love a challenge here at DEM Fire. Implementing innovative technology gives us the space to get creative with our solutions and provide the most effective fire engineering to maintain compliance and safety across all projects.

Working with fire and essential services experts like our team at DEM Fire will provide a modern fire protection plan that fits your specific requirements, no matter how unique they might be.
